Welcome, new folk, to BM! Also: design a T-shirt for us and I went mad in Travelling Man.

Hello and welcome to Beyond Monopoly! We are a boardgames club in York who meet regularly for fun boardgaming times. We play all modern boardgames- Euros, Social deducation, co-op, American; and if that means nothing to you, then come along and discover the exciting (genuinely) world of modern boardgames. We meet in the Bar Convent on the first and third Saturday of the month, from 10am until 9pm, and on the second and fourth Friday evening of the month, from 5pm until 9pm. If you can’t remember that then please sign up for regular reminders and updates! Absolutely everyone is welcome, and with our numbers attending you’re usually never waiting long for a game. First visit is free (wow!). Given we’re in the Bar Convent we do ask that people don’t bring in outside food and drink- instead drinks are provided, and the cafe does fantastic food (and we get 10% off).

So that’s this Saturday, Bar Convent, 10am-9pm.

Hopefully you’re still reading and interested, or skipped to this paragraph if you’re a regular, but I wanted to make sure we had something like the above at the top of the page. Extolling the virtues of Terra Mystica apropos of nothing may not be the most welcoming thing to newcomers. Anyway, you can skip this paragraph now, because it’s about to end.

Design a T-shirt for us! It’s Airecon soon- March 10th till 12th, Harrogate, buy your tickets. At the last Airecon all the other clubs were wearing club t-shirts. “Bradford Gamers”, “Shipley Gamers”, “Oakenshaw Gamers”, you get the picture. It meant our presence wasn’t apparent, despite the fact we had enough regulars there to field a  football team. So we need a T-shirt we can choose to wear with pride. At the moment the BM design is:

Which, let’s be honest, could do with some work. So I want YOU *picture the finger pointing poster* to design a logo we could put on a T-shirt. Otherwise I’m going with the above. Please email me at the usual email address (bmyork at gmail.com).

One more thing, don’t use the words ‘Beyond Monopoly’ as we may be changing our name (!!!). To decide whether we do or not, and what to, please come to our BM AGM sometime in February, exact date TBC.

After those shocks it’s time for a game recommendation of the week to calm things down. Well, I pootled into Travelling Man over the weekend and bought all their games. Not actually all of them, I must point out whilst Mike is reading, but a large number of them. I couldn’t resist- they were ridiculous bargains, ask Max. Or anybody else who saw them. As a result I have a large smorgasbord of games to bring, and I’m going to bring them in in bitesize chunks. This week:

Fearsome Floors

The Pursuit of Happiness

I’ll save Floors for next week’s recommendation, and make The Pursuit of Happiness the recommendation of the week.

*For best results play ‘Born Slippy’ whilst reading.*

Choose life.

Choose to enter a robot wars comptetion.

Choose a shoe collection.

Choose to dine out.

Choose to be an Analyst.

Choose to date Sonia.

Choose to start a family with Robert.

Choose to retire.

Choose a game jam.

Choose a board game collection.

Choose to do overtime.

But I didn’t choose all that, I chose a variety of other jobs, projects, relationships, and items which gave me more long term happiness when we both died of inevitable stress.

The Pursuit of Happiness is a card driven life game which plays up to 4 players in up to 90 minutes.

See you on Saturday!
