Hi everyone, and finally, after weeks of me not shutting up about it, it’s Geekfest this Sunday! But, before that, it’s a Beyond Monopoly meet on Saturday, 10am-9pm, the Bar Convent. Super games, great people, some dice, cubes representing various resources, lanyards, and more! If you’ve never been before, and have been linked here, we’re a friendly boardgaming club with a big variety of games, and enthusiastic people ready to play them (and teach them).
On Sunday it’s GeekFest, York’s premiere festival of Geek Culture. We will be running the open gaming all day, from 10am until 5pm. If you just fancy going and enjoying all the stuff there, from retro games, special escape rooms, sword things, wizzarding perhaps and more, then it’s £3 and sure to be good fun. I believe parking is free, but that’s going from this webpage: https://www.york.ac.uk/admin/estates/transport/parking/ so please don’t quote me on it. I’d advise parking in South campus car park near James’ college, I think that’s the closest to the exhibition centre. Edit- just realised all that info is here: https://geekfestyork.co.uk/info. Should have just linked to that.
If you are offering to help out then Thankyou! and here’s the details on what’s happening. On Saturday I will be driving up to GeekFest to pick up the entrance tickets for volunteers and then going to BM! to hand them out to people there who have volunteered. If you want to volunteer but haven’t told me yet, just tell me then. At the end of the Saturday BM, I will be loading up my car with games, so many games, and I’d appreciate some help from other volunteers to either help load my car, or load their own transport method. On Sunday I’ll be there about 9ish, so get down any time after that, but we need to be setup for 10. I’ll do a quick stockcheck of what games we’ve taken, just to make sure none go missing, then it’s a simple case of encouraging people to play games, teaching them and so forth. At 5 it finishes, a second stockcheck, and we’re done. Hopefully it should prove to be a great advertising opportunity for our great club, and a way to form stronger links with the University.
Almost forgot- I will also be selling some of our old games, the ones currently for sale, at GeekFest, so if you want them before then snap them up!
Game recommendation of the week [GeekFest special]…
actually, it’s that combined with…
A Game of Thrones is one of the fantastic wargames/ diplomacy light games, with a well matched theme that is more popular than ever. In it, 6 warring houses compete and connive to gain the most power, by backstabbing all around them. It’s a brutal game, but extremely enjoyable, strongly thematic and it feels like an event when you play it. So why the necessary expansion? Because it brings the playtime down from an epic 6-7 hours, to less than 2. It also changes playstyles and creates funny moments from seemingly irreverent strategies, but it’s mainly about the playtime. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic 6 hour game, and BGG claims it only takes up to 4 hours, which it may do with efficient players, but in today’s fast paced microwave world a 2 hour playtime is a bonus. What A Feast for Crows does is remove the start of the game where everyone is going through the motions raising armies, and the stalemate endgame where everyone is chipping away at the leader, and leaves the bloody no-mans-ground of the midgame, full of war, deceit, and last time I played it, Mike trying to sail from the Eyrie to the Arbor. Don’t ask. It’s a must for any fans of the book, and for fans of the show, and for fans of area control war/diplomacy games. The base game plays 6 in about as many hours, with the Expansion it plays 4 in 2 hours.
There we have it, the most geeky game I could think of for GeekFest. Considering the club doesn’t have Firefly at least. If you can think of any other geeky games please let me know, we could even use the facebook comments! Bonus points if you can think of a strongly thematic geek culture game which is quick to teach and plays in an hour or less.
