cancelled – 1st UK Friedrich championship – 1-3 august 2014

Just to be clear – this event was cancelled by the organisers due to
lack of support. Never mind.

Those plucky chaps Andrew and John have organised the 1st of many Friedrich Championship events to be held in the UK. The 1st UK Friedrich Championship (snappy title) will be held in our very own Bar Convent in York for 2.5 days this year. Starting on Friday 1st August 2014 at 1600 GMT, it will finish on Sunday 3rd August 2014 by 2200 GMT. Two and one half glorious days of gallant struggle, tactical brilliance and noble leadership enacted in our fair city. Dunno if there’s actually a prize yet.

This is an official championship tournament, properly authorised by the designer and the publisher of Friedrich, Histogames. Which is very impressive. It’s gone from Andrew being a lone voice promoting the game and going to Berlin by himself year after year, to a group traveling to compete in the World Championship in Berlin last year, to now running their own official tournament in the UK.

There is a charge to enter the contest, £20 per person, and if you come to the club, pay John or Andrew directly. For all the details, contact John directly:

Initially, the championship is open to UK players and residents and later they will open remaining slots to foreign players. For more detail on the game, read the pages on BGG. If you want to learn how to play, come to the club any Saturday meet (earlier the better), Andrew or John will be happy to give you an explanation and a practice session or two.

And remember, the Bar Convent does B&B, so the sooner you book a room, the happier you’ll be.
