now you’re tolkien!

Or… You’re getting to be a Hobbit with me! Or… It’s Mordor, She Wrote! Or… well you get the idea. One of our members, Neil Hayton, is also in The Tolkien Society and wanted to get your interest. Read on.

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit…”

In 1969 the Tolkien Society was founded to further interest in the life and works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.B.E., the author of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and other works of fiction and philological study. Based in the United Kingdom and registered as an independent, non-profit making charity (No. 273809), the Society has an international membership which benefits from regular publications and events.

The Society helps to bring together those with like minds, both formally and informally, with gatherings throughout the year. There are two main gatherings each year at a national level.

The first is the AGM and Annual Dinner and the second event is Oxonmoot, held over a weekend in late September, often in a college of Oxford University. Events are many and varied, and include talks, slide shows, a guided walk around historic Oxford, a lunchtime reception, and an evening party.

We also have smaller, more informal groups throughout the country called ‘Smials’ which vary depending on the smial. The one I know is in Halifax and you can find out more if you speak to me at Beyond Monopoly!.”

If you want to be introduced to Neil, or want his contact details, please ask. Of course, we have Tolkien related games; the Hobbit, Lord Of The Rings (a nice co-op), Confrontation (2 player) and there’s a ton of them on BGG.

And now, back to the puns. erm Faramir er gandalf… hmmm, who’s Sauron now?
